Get the Most from Your PS5 Pro
The TV features, HDMI setup, and PS5 settings needed to get the most from PS5 Pro games.
PS5 Pro can improve image quality, ray tracing, and frame-rate consistency, but the result depends on both the game and the display. You do not need a new TV to use the console, although certain features require modern display hardware.

What PS5 Pro Can Realistically Deliver
PS5 Pro combines a stronger GPU, improved ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). PSSR reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower internal resolution, helping developers pursue better image quality at higher frame rates.
For many action games, steady 60 fps offers a strong balance between the responsiveness of 120 fps and the visual quality possible at 30 fps. It does not automatically mean 1080p: a game may render at 1080p, 1440p, a dynamic resolution, or higher before reconstructing a 4K output. Native 4K at a locked 120 fps remains unrealistic for many demanding games.
A 120 Hz TV is still valuable. It enables supported 120 fps modes and evenly paced 40 fps modes. VRR can reduce tearing and unevenness when frame rate varies, but it does not raise frame rate or rescue severe drops.
Most importantly, developers decide how to use the extra power. A PS5 Pro patch can add higher resolution, improved effects, ray tracing, PSSR, or new frame-rate modes. An unpatched game may hold a dynamic resolution or unstable target more consistently, but a game locked to 30 fps remains locked without an update.
TV Requirements for the Full Experience
When shopping, verify the following rather than trusting an HDMI 2.1 logo by itself:
- Native 4K 120 Hz panel: Ignore marketing terms such as “motion rate” unless the panel and input are confirmed to support 120 Hz.
- 4K 120 Hz input: Check which HDMI ports support it and whether one is also needed for eARC audio.
- HDMI Forum VRR: Look for testing with PS5, not only another adaptive-sync label.
- Low input lag: The TV needs a good Game Mode or ALLM. Motion interpolation usually adds delay.
- Good HDR: An HDR logo only confirms format support. Read measured reviews for brightness, black levels, contrast, tone mapping, and Game Mode accuracy.
- A complete HDMI path: Use the included cable or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Any receiver, soundbar, switch, capture device, and additional cable must also pass 4K 120 Hz, HDR, and VRR.
An excellent 4K 60 Hz TV can still look better than a poor 120 Hz model. Do not require 144 Hz, DisplayPort, FreeSync Premium, G-SYNC, or Dolby Vision solely for PS5 Pro; none replaces confirmed PS5-compatible 4K 120 Hz, VRR, low input lag, and good HDR.
Set Up the TV and Console
- Update the PS5 Pro system software and TV firmware.
- Connect the console to a 4K 120 Hz-capable port. Enable that port’s enhanced HDMI format and the TV’s Game Mode.
- Under Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output, normally leave Resolution, 120 Hz Output, VRR, ALLM, Deep Color Output, and Video Transfer Rate on Automatic. Set HDR to On When Supported.
- Run Adjust HDR after the TV is in HDR Game Mode.
- Enable Enhance PSSR Image Quality and Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games when available. Disable either for a game that behaves unexpectedly.
- Open Information for the Connected HDMI Device and confirm that 2160p, 120 Hz, HDR, and VRR are detected.
- Choose the desired quality, performance, 40 fps, or 120 fps mode inside each game.
If a feature is missing, connect the console directly to the TV first. Then check the HDMI port, enhanced-input setting, cable, firmware, and any device normally placed between them.
Is an 8K TV Required?
No. Supported games can output 8K only to an 8K 60 Hz display with Display Stream Compression (DSC), and VRR is disabled during 8K output. A high-quality 4K 120 Hz TV with VRR and strong HDR is the more useful choice for most PS5 Pro games.
Which Should You Upgrade First?
Upgrade the TV first if your current display is 1080p, has weak picture quality or high input lag, or cannot show the modes you want. A better TV can immediately improve your current console and everything else you watch, then carry forward when you buy the PS5 Pro.
Buy the PS5 Pro first if you already have a good 4K 60 Hz TV and want sharper or steadier 60 fps modes in supported games. The console’s image-quality and performance improvements can still be visible now, while a later 4K 120 Hz VRR TV will unlock the remaining display options.
Keep the current TV if you like its picture and mainly use 30 or 60 fps modes. Upgrade both only when the existing console and display each prevent you from getting the experience you want.
The best TV is not the one with the longest feature list. It is the one that supports the PS5 Pro modes you want and fits your room, audio setup, and budget.
